International Visiting Scholar Programs

The International Visiting Scholar Program is designed for international school personnel, researchers, professionals, and students from other countries who are not pursuing an academic degree at Gallaudet University. The program is individually designed to meet the needs of each scholar, in which participants can audit courses, gain practical experience by being exposed to what is happening at Gallaudet, visit schools, organizations, and agencies. There are great opportunities to do intensive data collection in acquiring specific information and skills relating to deafness. This is a one- or two-semester, non-degree program.

Rebekka Bieri is a native of Switzerland but lives in Jordan in the Middle East. Ms. Bieri is here at Gallaudet to learn about interpreting and how to provide interpreting service.

Rebekka's interesting story

Ana Regina Campello hails from Santa Catarina, Brazil where she is a Ph.D. student at the Universidad Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC). She attended Gallaudet University from early December 2005-2006 as a Visiting Researcher/Scholar under the auspices of the Global Education and Scholar Services (GESS). Ms. Campello, who holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Library Science from the Universidad de Santa Ursula and a second Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from the Universidad de Rio de Janiero and is expecting to receive her Master of Arts degree in Linguistics from UFSC in 2007, was at Gallaudet to conduct research related to Deaf Education. Ms. Campello, who served for four years as the first President of the Brazilian Association for the Deaf, explained that Brazil has one school for the deaf but that the majority of Brazilian deaf children are in mainstream programs.
