  Sylvain Angouono
Life in Gabon

On November 13, 2007 Sylvain Angouono along with other participants presented to the Gallaudet community, information about life in his country, Gabon, Central Africa. Their presentation focused on issues related to being Deaf in Gabon, Gabon’s culture as well as its economic development. Sylvain explained that Gabon is a country of wealth but without the proper support the only school for the Deaf is located in Gabon’s capital, Libreville. There has been one other school for the Deaf that he knows of but because we are often creatures of habit, many of the old ways dominate the decision to attend or not to attend school. As of right now he is unsure of the current position of the other school. Sylvain also enlightened the community about his personal experience of life in Gabon and life at Gallaudet University.   He was deafened at the age of 6 as a result of illness. Nonetheless Sylvain capitalized on every educational opportunity presented to him and excelled. It was only later by accident, that he found out about the school for the Deaf located in Libreville. Having no prior knowledge of sign language, his interest was sparked when he saw two deaf students signing. From there he contacted Unisda which is a French organization to seek help in locating a University for the Deaf. After an extensive search, they informed him about Gallaudet University. Although he applied to begin at Bellarmine University in Kentucky before transferring to the English Language Institute (ELI) program at Gallaudet in the summer of 2004. He enrolled as an undergraduate student in the Fall of 2005 and is now continuing his education at Gallaudet.
